Having seen the tradition of Faral since childhood its difficult for me to think of Diwali without it. So I try and make couple of sweet and savory treats every year and share the recipes with you. For this year’s Diwali, I made Sweet Shankarpali and this Kurmura Chivda – one sweet and savory dish. Kurmura or Murmura Chivda is a super simple, crunchy and easy to make savory snack. Store this in airtight container and this chivda stays fresh and crunchy for weeks.

Now to the recipe….
3 cups puffed rice
1/2 tsp mustard seeds (rai)
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (zeera)
pinch of asafoetida (hing)
2-3 green chillies roundly chopped
10 – 12 curry leaves
2 tbsp dalia (split roasted chickpeas)
2 tbsp raw groundnuts
1/4 tsp haldi
salt to taste
1 tsp sugar
1 tbsp oil
In a vessel, dry roast the puffed rice on low-medium heat till they are crispy (approx 5-10 mins). You will know its done when you hear a sharp crunchy sound when you eat one. Remove these on a clean plate and keep aside. Now in the same vessel heat some oil and once hot add the mustard seeds. Once they start crackling add the cumin seeds and asafoetida and then green chillies and curry leaves. Stir and after a while till the curry leaves and chillies start changing color. Now add the raw peanuts, stir for a minute and then add the dalia. Keep stirring intermittently till the dalia turns light brown and the both groundnuts and dalia are crunchy and cooked.
Now add haldi and stir the mixture for a minute and then add the roasted puffed rice, salt and sugar. Mix everything well. Switch of the gas and allow the mixture to cool and then store in airtight container.
