Chana Dal is an easy healthy Indian lentil dish made with split chickpeas, onion, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, herbs, and spices. This Punjabi-style chana dal recipe can be made using the Instant Pot, pressure cooker, or in a regular pot on the stovetop.


Rinse the lentils and then pressure cook them in Instant Pot or pressure cooker with black cardamom, turmeric, water, and salt. Whisk once done. Keep aside. 

Step 1-4

Heat oil in a pan and make a tempering of cumin seeds, asafoetida, & dried red chilies. Add onion, ginger, garlic, and green chili and saute until golden brown. 

Step 5-8

Next, saute spices and tomatoes until tomatoes are soft. Stir in the cooked dal. 

Step 9-12

Adjust consistency with water. Bring the dal to a simmer. Finish with Kasuri methi, and cilantro.

Step 13-16

Delicious Chana Dal is ready! Serve it with rice. roti or naan with side of salad and pickle or chutney.
