Dal Fry is a popular Indian lentil dish made with toor dal (yellow split pigeon peas), onion, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, herbs, and spices. This Punjabi-style dal fry recipe can be made using the Instant Pot, pressure cooker, or in a regular pot on the stovetop.

Ingredients

Rinse the lentils and then pressure cook them in Instant Pot or pressure cooker with water and salt. Whisk once done. Keep aside. 

Step 1-4

Heat oil in a pan and make a tempering of mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves & dried red chilies. Add onion and saute until golden brown. 

Step 5-8

Next saute ginger, garlic, spices and tomatoes until tomatoes are soft. Cook until this masala starts oozing oil from sides.

Step 9-12

Add the cooked, whisked dal to the masala. Adjust consistency with water. Bring dal to a simmer. Finish with kasuri methi, lemon juice and cilantro.

Step 13-16

Delicious Dal Fry is ready! Serve it with rice. roti or naan with side of salad and pickle or chutney.
