Tomato Chutney

Tomato Chutney is made with ripe tomatoes, spices, and herbs. It is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors with a hint of spice. It is often served with idli, dosa, vada, and Uttapam, or as a dip for snacks but also pairs well with plain rice, sandwiches, paratha, and pakoras.

Ingredients

Saute chana dal urad dal, red chilies, & cumin seeds in hot oil. Add the garlic and chopped tomatoes and cook till the tomatoes are soft.

Step 1-4

Add the spices (turmeric powder, Kashmiri red chili powder, sugar (or jaggery), and salt) and cook. Cool and then grind to a smooth paste.

Step 5-8

Make the tempering: Heat oil in a small wok/kadhai or pan. Add the mustard seeds and Urad dal. Once they splutter, add the asafoetida, curry leaves, and dry red chili (optional). Mix well and add over the chutney.

Step 9-12

Spicy tomato chutney is ready!

Serve with traditional South Indian breakfast items like dosa, idli, vada, and uttapam or as a dipping sauce for Indian snacks such as pakoras, samosas, parathas, and bhajis.
