Creamy Avocado Dip is a super simple sauce full of Mexican flavors. When I say simple I truly mean it. All you need is a blender and 5 minutes!

It's a great alternative to the popular guacamole and a real crowd-pleaser.

We are obsessed with it and use it with everything, to name a few, Vegetarian Crunchwrap Supreme and Veg Nachos!!

This Avocado Crema is

  • Smooth, creamy and tangy
  • bursting with Mexican flavor
  • crowd pleaser
  • super easy to make
  • can be made ahead of time

The creamy avocado dip also known as avocado crema is a great alternative to chunky guacamole.

It is made by blending ripe avocados, sour cream, lime juice, cilantro, garlic, and spices together to create a light sauce that is so versatile.

It's smoother, creamier, tangier, and absolutely addictive. Let's see what we will need and how to make avocado crema!!

Recipe Ingredients

The ingredients for the avocado dip on a kitchen work surface

Avocados: Use ripe avocados that have dark skin and yield to gentle pressure. It makes them easy to blend with the other ingredients and is naturally creamier.

Sourcream: It makes the dip really creamy, adds a slight tang, and helps to balance the heat from the jalapeno. Alternately full-fat plain yogurt or plain Greek yogurt can also be used.

Jalapeno: I use half a jalapeno to bring a little heat. If you like things on the spicier side, you can use a whole jalapeno or skip it.

Garlic: A little fresh garlic really boosts the flavors. Alternately use garlic powder as a replacement. If you don't like garlic, skip it.

Lime Juice: Use fresh lemon or lime juice rather than bottled. It's so much more flavorful.

Cilantro leaves: Cilantro adds a wonderful fresh herby flavor.

Spices: Salt, pepper, and cumin powder for flavoring and bringing this dip together.

Step by Step Instructions

It's so quick and easy to make a batch of this dip. It's too easy not to try!

Steps for adding avocado dip ingredients to food processor and blending until creamy

Cut the avocados in half lengthwise and take off the pit. Scoop out the green pulp (flesh) from each half.

1 - Add all of the ingredients, avocados, sour cream, jalapeno, garlic, cilantro leaves, salt, pepper, cumin powder, and lemon/lime juice to a food processor or blender.

2 - Blend until smooth and creamy. Remove it in a serving bowl and serve immediately or cover and keep refrigerated until ready to serve.

Serving Suggestion

This versatile avocado dip goes well with almost every Mexican dish that you would use avocados or guacamole with. Here are a few ways to use it as a

  • Dip  - with chips or veggies or fries.
  • Sauce or spread - With tacos, Crunchwrap, burritos, quesadillas, tostada, nachos or enchiladas and even burgers and sandwiches.
  • Salad dressing - thin out the consistency using water and use as a dressing for your favorite salad or drizzle on your burrito bowl.

Storage

This avocado dip can be stored for 3-4 days in the fridge. Just make sure the leftover dip is stored in an airtight container.

The sour cream and lime in this sauce delay the browning processes but the chances of browning increase the longer it sits so use as soon as possible.

Scoop off the brown parts and mix well before serving. The dip is still good to be served.

Recipe Tips

Use ripe avocados - Underripe avocados don’t blend well and will make the dip taste slightly bitter.

For a lighter version - replace sour cream with nonfat plain Greek yogurt. The flavor will vary, slightly more tart but still great.

Dip consistency -  If it's too thick, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time until it reaches your desired consistency. If it's thin, blend in another half of an avocado, or a tablespoon or two of sour cream at a time until you reach the desired consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this like guacamole?

This dip might use the same base (avocados) as the guacamole but is definitely different in terms of taste and texture.

This dip is smooth & creamy whereas guacamole is usually chunky and crunchy (from onions). Guacamole gets the tanginess from tomatoes and lime/lemon juice whereas tomatoes have been replaced by sour cream in this dip.

Can I make this avocado dip ahead of time?

To make this avocado dip ahead of time, store it in the fridge in an airtight container with plastic wrap pressed directly to the surface to prevent it from browning. Minimize air exposure as much as possible.

Can I make it vegan?

Yes, replace yogurt or sour cream with a plant-based alternative or vegan yogurt.
