two glasses of avocado banana smoothie

The avocado and banana smoothie is my go-to smoothie for my toddler. It's so silky, smooth, and delicious that she loves it!!

It's a great breakfast or snack option and a very healthy drink not only for kids but also for adults.

If you love avocados, definitely try Guacamole and Creamy Avocado Dip.

This Banana Avocado Smoothie is

  • quick and easy
  • made with fresh ingredients
  • naturally creamy, and rich
  • healthy, filling, and nourishing

Avocado Banana Smoothie as the name suggests has avocado and banana as the main ingredients.

This creamy, rich, and nutritious smoothie is very easy to make, comes together in 5 mins, and makes a filling and healthy breakfast or snack option.

All you need is to do is blend all the ingredients to make this silky smooth creamy smoothie.

Both avocado and banana are considered great first food for babies and a natural way to get in some healthy fats.

I started my kids with avocado and banana puree and eventually graduated to this smoothie as they grew.

Health Benefits

This banana and avocado smoothie is packed with nutrients and full of amazing benefits that are essential to staying healthy!

Avocados are a nutrient powerhouse!  They are packed with fiber, vitamins minerals, folate, good fats, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Bananas are a great source of B6, manganese, Potassium and are known to aid digestion, prevent constipation and provide energy

Overall this smoothie is a great combo, that not only fills you up but also provides you the essential vitamins and minerals.

Recipe Ingredients

Avocado: Chose ripe avocado for that smooth velvety texture. Fresh and frozen can be used.

Banana: Use a fresh banana that is slightly ripe yet firm since they are high in antioxidants and naturally sweeter too. Bananas help to make this smoothie really creamy and add a natural sweetness. Fresh and frozen can be used.

Milk: I use whole milk for a really creamy smoothie but you can use any milk of choice like almond milk, soy, oat, or even yogurt instead of milk.

Optional add-ins: These are optional and nice to add (if you have) as they give an additional nutritional boost. I’ve used chia seeds and milled flax seeds. Hemp seeds, collagen powder, or protein powders can also be added too!

Sweetener: This is optional and can be adjusted to taste. I prefer using Medjool dates for sweetening my smoothies. Honey, maple syrup, or sugar can be used too, or simply skip. Adjust sweetness to your taste.

Toppings: I’ve used Chopped pistachios, you can use nuts of choice

Step by Step Instructions

Four process shots to show how to make the avocado banana smoothie

1 to 4 - Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until nice, creamy, and smooth! Serve in a tall glass and enjoy immediately!!

Serving suggestion

You can serve this nutrient-rich smoothie as a snack or for a healthy breakfast. Here are my three favorite ways to serve this creamy avocado banana Smoothie!!

As a smoothie - Serve fresh in a tall glass over ice topped with some chopped pistachios (optional). Super refreshing!!

Smoothie bowl - Serve in a bowl topped with granola, chopped banana, or other fruit, nuts, and/or seeds. So delicious!!

Popsicles - Freeze into your favorite popsicle molds and enjoy a delicious treat!!

Variations

Chocolate Avocado smoothie - add 1-2 tablespoons of cacao powder or cocoa powder

Avocado banana peanut butter smoothie - add 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter or nut butter of choice

Blueberry banana avocado smoothie - add 1-2 cups of fresh or frozen blueberries or replace with the fruit of choice

Avocado banana green smoothie - add 1 handful of greens of choice like spinach, kale.

Recipe Tips

Meal prep: Peel the banana, avocado and store them in a freezer-safe ziplock and freeze until ready to use. All you need to do is grab a bag, dump it with milk and sweetener and blend!!

Use ripe fruit. Ripe bananas provide natural sweetness to the smoothie and are a great way to reduce the amount of sugar. In addition, ripe avocado and bananas make the smoothie even creamier.

Add Greens: It's a great way to add greens to your diet as you barely taste them in a smoothie. Just add a handful of washed kale or spinach.

Amp up the protein - either add your favorite protein powder or go the natural way and add nut butter (almond butter, cashew butter, or peanut butter) or greek yogurt.

Amount of liquid: may vary depending on the type of blender. High-powered blenders blend much better, so if you have a regular or personal-size blender, you may need to add more milk/liquid. I've used my Vitamix.

Consistency: If your smoothie seems too thick, add in a bit of extra milk.  If it seems too thin, add more bananas.

Discoloration: This smoothie is best served fresh!! Both avocados and bananas tend to turn black when exposed to air, (oxidize). So try to serve the smoothie as soon as it's ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make this smoothie vegan?

Yes! It's simple to make this vegan by swapping the whole milk for a plant-based variety. Almond, coconut, oat, and soy all work well.

Can you make smoothies in advance?

Smoothies are best enjoyed as soon as they are made. Once they are blended they begin to oxidize and start to lose their nutrients. So I will not recommend making this one ahead of time.

If you can't drink it immediately, I would suggest prepping the ingredients and freezing avocado and banana, and blending it just before drinking.

Can you use frozen avocado and banana?

Yes! You can use fresh or frozen banana and avocado, just add it straight into the blender. If you use frozen you will have a nice ice cream-style smoothie.

Great recipe… I added a block of frozen spinach and a handful of frozen mango and didn’t use dates or honey to sweeten as my banana was nice and ripe …. Yum yum 😋
